Frequently asked questions

Short answers to some of the questions parents ask most often.

What does a speech and language therapist do?

A speech and language therapist is a specialist who works with the development of speech, language and communication, as well as with difficulties in these areas.

When should I see a speech and language therapist?

When you have concerns about your child’s speech, understanding or communication. It is better to discuss your questions early than to wait for your child to grow out of it. You will find example reasons on the Information for parents page.

Should I wait for my child to grow out of it?

Every child develops at their own pace, but if something concerns you, there is no need to wait. Talking to a specialist helps to judge whether support is needed.

How should I prepare for a conversation with a speech and language therapist?

It helps to write down your observations beforehand: what words and sentences your child uses, what exactly concerns you and in what situations you notice it. If your child attends kindergarten or school, you can also share the teachers’ observations.

How can I help my child at home?

Conversation, reading together, songs and playing together are a natural way to support speech. You will find more ideas on the Information for parents page.
